The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, also known as Sri Dalada Maligawa, is regarded as the most important Buddhist temple in Sri Lanka and one of the most famous in the world. Located in Kandy, the temple is visited by many and is situated within the former palace complex of the Sri Lankan Royal Dynasty. The temple is believed to house a tooth of the Buddha, which is kept in a special chamber under a golden roof.
The tooth relic was brought to Sri Lanka in 377 AD by Prince Dantha and Princess Hemamala and was presented to the reigning King. It was believed that whoever controlled the tooth relic had the right to rule the land, making it a target for theft. Protecting the tooth relic became the responsibility of the Kandy Kings and symbolized governance.
In 1815, a treaty was signed between British officials and Kandy Chieftains, leading to the end of the kingdom era in Sri Lanka. The royal family was imprisoned and deported, marking the shift to centralized governance in Sri Lanka.

The Royal Palace, Adjacent to the temple is the former Royal Palace of the Kandyan Kingdom. This historical structure now houses the National Museum of Kandy, showcasing artifacts that offer insights into Sri Lanka’s rich history and the temple’s significance.
The Audience Hall, Another important structure is the Audience Hall, or Magul Maligawa, where the Kandyan kings held court. It’s known for its exquisite wood carvings and is a fine example of traditional Sri Lankan architecture.
The Temple Museum, The Temple Museum, located within the complex, houses an array of gifts and offerings made to the temple and the tooth relic over the centuries. These include intricate carvings, precious gems, and other valuables, each with a story to tell.
